The Department of Education explicitly warned institutions that they must investigate any claims of sexual misconduct on campus. Any school that refuses could lose federal funding or be referred to the Dept. of Justice for disciplinary action.  “It’s nice when you carry the big stick of the federal government,” says Catherine Lhamon, the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education.
